Best Thrift Stores in Kensington Market

In Toronto, there's a small neighborhood near Chinatown called Kensington Market that features a variety of niche shops, restaurants, and experiences. It's nationally known for its counterculture aesthetic and multi-cultural community. While a bit grungy, there is an undeniable appeal to the narrow streets and murals that decorate many of the old buildings. However, the real highlight is the endless amount of thrift stores that are overflowing with fantastic pieces.

Whether you're into 80's nostalgia, western wear, minimalism, or just a classic goodwill-esq experience --- there is a store for you. The range of clothing between the twenty or so shops along the street is immensely impressive. I've been a frequent visitor since I was a teenager and still have yet to get sick of it as there is a constant rotation of new items. Here are my top five must stops when shopping in Kensington.

1. Space Vintage

I love the collection of this store. They focus heavily on feminine and sensual styles with a wide array of 2000's lingerie that is inclusive for plus size people. Every time I come in here I walk out with at least one gem. My only complaint would be that the store is rather small and has less stock than others. However, this can be a positive after the overstimulation of more cluttered stores.

2. Exile

This place is the definition of organized chaos. If you need anything, no matter how specific, it is most likely in this store. Known for housing a huge collection of costumes, there are old majorette uniforms and 70's sheer jumpsuits. Yet, the most enjoyable aspect is how the racks are organized into sub-categories of style aesthetics and decades to cut down on search time.

3. Victory Girl Vintage

I am a huge fan of midcentury clothing, which is tragically both hard to find in good condition and extremely expensive. This shop has a rather Western inspired style that feels hilariously out of place in Canada. They have a good variety but focus on pieces from the 40s-70s. All the clothing is in pristine condition with very little sign of wear. Consequently, the prices are rather high but are equivalent to the rarity of the items.

4. Vintage Depot

While difficult to maneuver in, this store is two stories full of late 80s and more modern pieces. If you're more into thrifting recent decades, this is definitely the place for you. They mainly sell most button up shirts, graphic t-shirts, pants, and jackets. It is one of the most gender-neutral stores in the area. Additionally, they have a 10% student discount which is always helpful.

5. Vintage Outlaw

I appreciate how thoughtfully curated this store is. They are trend forward and pull things depending on what is in current cyclization on social media platforms like TikTok. It feels like if Depop had a permanent storefront that was every bit of expensive as the app. While I do enjoy it and can occasionally find things on sale, it is usually not within my interests or price range.
